When it’s time to replace appliances and electronics, it pays to buy the most energy-efficient models you can afford. Even if you pay a little more up front, you’ll likely save over time through lower energy use.
Your top three energy users are likely the refrigerator, clothes washer and dishwasher.
Your refrigerator is the biggest energy user in your kitchen. If it’s pre-1993, it’s very inefficient, so upgrade to a newer model to save. Use the ENERGY STAR® online calculator to see what you’ll save. See more appliance tips.
If your clothes washer isn’t ENERGY STAR rated and you wash with hot water, you’ll save by upgrading. (ENERGY STAR dryers are also a smart choice if you’re replacing yours already.)
If your dishwasher is 10 years old, consider replacing it for an energy-efficient model. It will:
- Eliminate the need for pre-rinsing dishes
- Adjust wash cycles and water to the load
- Boost cleaning temperature internally so you can keep your water heater at a lower setting
Wait to replace other appliances.
Other than with fridges, washers and dishwashers, it usually doesn’t pencil out to buy a new appliance just to save energy if it’s still running well.
Choose ENERGY STAR appliances.
These products use 10 to 50 percent less energy and water than standard models.
Earn cash back.
Energy Trust of Oregon offers cash-back incentives on select front-load clothes washers. Those that qualify are usually the most efficient, but not all ENERGY STAR models qualify.
Buy ENERGY STAR® equipment that can use about half the electricity of standard equipment.
Put your computer to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. “Sleep” saves energy; screensavers use it.
Turn off computers and related equipment if you’re not using it for more than two hours.
Better yet, unplug electronic devices when they're not in use. Some electronics, such as televisions and video game consoles, use a surprising amount of energy when they're off but plugged in. See our Wattsferatu video.
Use a smart strip for easy on-off of related devices to cut waste from all those power vampires.
