Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility

North America’s first major renewable energy facility combining wind, solar and battery storage in one location

Together with NextEra Energy Resources, we are developing the nation’s first major renewable energy facility that will integrate wind and solar generation with battery storage in one location. The addition of this new facility is an important step in cost-effectively accelerating Oregon’s transition to clean and reliable energy.

Here’s how it works:

  • The Wheatridge Energy Facility will generate power using wind and solar technology
  • The battery will store that energy so it can be used at any time, even if the wind is not blowing or the sun is not shining
  • Together, these technologies will ensure energy reliability from renewable resources

Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility

Clean energy and reliability together

The ability to create and store renewable energy like this will allow Oregon to be less dependent on fossil fuels without compromising a reliable, steady flow of electricity. It’s an important step in creating a healthier and brighter Oregon that also helps fight the effects of climate change. Plus, with the addition of the Wheatridge facility, we will be able to meet about 50 percent of our customers’ power needs with emissions-free generation.

NextEra plans to break ground on the facility in 2019, starting with the wind component. Construction on the solar and battery components is planned for 2021.
