Strong Communities

We care about Oregon with programs, sponsorships and the PGE Foundation

Our Commitment

For more than a century, PGE has been investing in programs and events that reflect our customers’ values, our employees’ community interests, and the needs of the communities we serve.

With this commitment in mind, we focus our community investments in these areas:

Education and workforce development

We have plans for a bright future, and we know we can’t get there without an educated and diverse workforce.

That’s why we give to programs that support education and workforce development — with a specific focus on middle and high school, career readiness and college-level programs with success in improving student achievement, technical knowledge and soft skills needed in today’s workplace.

Delving deeper, we engage in policy discussions that seek to affect systemic educational change and close the achievement gap.

With a practical mindset, we aim to encourage and train young men and women for work in the utilities by supporting programs that build trade skills and engage students in CTE (career technical education), STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fostering critical thinking skills, imagination and perseverance. We also support arts-based programming that inspires innovation and creativity in the classroom.

Safe and stable families

Safety is a mantra we never stop repeating. And, we share that message with our youngest customers starting in grade school by providing classroom resources that teach electrical safety and energy efficiency to students throughout the region.

We also visit community events throughout our service area, sharing presentations that offer engaging lessons in safety and disaster preparedness.

We believe a safety net is vital for thriving communities. We back that belief with a focus on preventive programs that promote family stability in the areas of food insecurity, housing, mental health and parenting skills, supporting programs that help families with children develop stable family relationships, economic security and safe and consistent home environments that foster healthy child development.

Environmental stewardship

PGE is working to secure a sustainable, affordable energy future for Oregon. That future includes preserving and promoting a healthy community and encouraging sustainable initiatives that reduce the impact on the environment. That’s why we support programs that help protect fish and wildlife, enhance air and water quality and promote energy efficiency.

Employee contributions

PGE employees and retirees are generous with their time and money. They record more than 45,000 volunteer hours annually, making them one of the most industrious corporate volunteer teams in Oregon.

To recognize their volunteer efforts, PGE awards employee grants to schools and nonprofits where our employees and retirees volunteer. PGE employees also contribute through PGE’s Employee Giving Campaign at a rate well above the national average. In 2018, the contributions of PGE employees combined with a 100 percent company match totaled more than $2 million.

Energy education

We offer K-12 schools in our service area a variety of resources to spark learning on electrical safety, energy efficiency and renewable power, including:

  • Free teaching materials
  • Live presentations for elementary and middle schools
  • Interactive energy education websites to reinforce classroom learning
  • Classroom speakers on electricity generation and distribution, as well as tours of PGE’s generating facilities

PGE Foundation

A separate nonprofit organization, the PGE Foundation expands the work of PGE’s community investment activities throughout Oregon. Charged with a mission to improve the life of Oregonians, the foundation focus areas include education; safe and stable families; and arts & culture. The foundation donates about $1 million annually via grants to nonprofit groups in PGE’s operations area.
